Wine

Route de svinsThe village of Saint Sernin du Plain is less than 10 kms from the region of the Côte d’Or. After visiting the town of Beaune, drive down the ‘route des vins’ through villages bearing the names of Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Pouligny Montrachet, Santenay…. where wines of excellence are produced.
To the South, follow the Côte Chalonnaise where the villages of Rully, Mercurey, Givry, Montagny are to be found.

An alternative to the traditional routes is that of the route now in place for organically grown wines. Vineyards are to be found in the Côte Chalonnaise, the Couchois and the Maconnais.

vineyard in autumnWine tasting can be done individually by popping into different domaines where you will be received by the owners and offered different wines to taste with a view perhaps to buying something. Or, for the less confident, it is possible to go on an organised wine tasting tour. There are also a number of wine co-operatives in the area which offer the possibility of tasting.

Restaurants

Burgundy snailsWine and food go together in Burgundy and it is possible to eat well at restaurants which are very reasonably priced. On the menu you can find traditional Burgundy cuisine such as snails or ‘boeuf bourguignon’ or you might want to try something in one of the restaurants offering more gastronomic cuisine, including some which are rated in the Michelin Guide.

As a general rule it is best to book in advance, especially in the tourist season. However, in the larger towns such as Chalon or Beaune, there are many restaurants and advance booking is not always necessary. It is common for restaurants to have a terrace for ‘al-fresco’ eating on a summer evening.

Music

Folk musiciansSince 1982 the Fête de la Musique, celebrated nationally, has taken place on the 21st June – the day of the summer solstice. On this day music is celebrated throughout the country from the smallest village up to the capital.

The region around Saint Sernin du Plain also has other music festivals, notably in July.
Early July sees one week of Jazz at Couches with indoor and open air concerts. From mid-July onwards there are festivals in Chalon sur Saône and in Saint Sernin du Plain. Chalon dans la Rue takes place over a long weekend and is a festival of music and street entertainment. Les Nuits du Mont Rome takes place during one week in July. The recreated Roman theatre on the Mont Rome is the site for a series of open air concerts offering a variety of music: classical, jazz, folk… After the concerts there is the possibility of taking a light supper and tasting wine from local producers.
